I grew up in Evanston, Illinois, outside Chicago.
When I was a kid, I loved to draw.
I liked to draw the same things over and over.
I went away to college at Brown University, and took classes at Rhode Island School of Design.
Then I moved to New York City.
Looking for a job, nothing was quite right.
How could I get paid for being an artist?
I took my portfolio all over town.
And showed my drawings to everyone.
One day my big break came.
Someone hired me to draw pictures for a children’s book.
Then I tried my hand at writing.
Soon I was writing stories AND illustrating them.
Now I work in a studio in Harlem.
Still drawing my favorite things.
... over and over.
When I’m not working, I ride my bike and go to flea markets.
Write, and tell me what you like to draw.
